Pens
Welcome to Pheasant Ridge. Our Pens are below.
Individual pens consist of a 4’ X 4’ X 4’ house, a waist hight perch, and for most species, at least one type of nesting box
Impeyans & Temmincks have roof nesting boxes
Most species have elevated cube nesting boxes. Reeves & Temmincks (and some individual pens of other species have tipi nesting boxes)
Chick pens - chicks come out of the hatchers and go into the round baby pen for 1-2 days. Next, they move into the small rectangular second baby pens for several days.
The second baby pens have a large heated area and an area off to the side where the chicks can learn to move away from the heat to eat and drink. Larger chick pens are 48” long with a heated area and an area for food and water. The largest indoor chick pens do not have heat lamps to get them used to room temperature before going outside to the pheasant house.
The Pheasant House has indoor pens connected to outdoor pens by a closable door. The Pheasant House can be heated, but generally is not except for cold snaps in late spring. When chicks are first moved out to the Pheasant House, they are closed in for the night and any time it rains. As the chicks get older, they are moved towards the north end of the house and are given more freedom. Before they are moved to completely outdoor chick pens, they are moved to the Overflow Pheasant House where the doors are left open 24/7, but they still have the option of going inside whenever they want. This prepares them how to behave when there is bad weather.
